“While the army is trying to deal with the threat posed by terror, it is creating a disaster,” warn hundreds of discharged Israeli combat soldiers about their service in the occupied territories. In this film screening and talk by two former soldiers, Breaking the Silence examines the devastating emotional price being paid by IDF soldiers during service in Gaza, Hebron, and Bethlehem, and after discharge.

Breaking the Silence

Yehuda Shaul was born in 1982. Born and raised in Jerusalem to parents who immigrated from North America, Shaul grew up in an ultra orthodox family. He went to yeshiva and graduated from high school in Mhale Michmash, a West Bank settlement near Ramallah. Shaul was drafted to the Israel Defense Forces Nahal Brigade and rose to the rank of commander and platoon sergeant. As a soldier, he served in many Palestinian West Bank cities, including Ramallah, Bethlehem, and Hebron. Shaul participated in “Operation Defensive Shield” in April, 2002. Discharged from the IDF in 2004, he co-founded Breaking the Silence and now works as its executive director. (See an interview with Shaul on Democracy Now.)

Dotan Greenvald was born in 1983 and grew up in Kiryat Yam, near Haifa. He was part of the Hanoar Ha’Oved Ve’Halomed socialist youth movement. Greenvald was drafted in 2002, was placed in the Nahal Brigade, and trained as a sniper. He served two years in the West Bank, primarily in Hebron. The day after his military discharge, Greenvald became a Breaking the Silence activist. Greenvald currently lives in Jerusalem and is studying to be a certified tour guide.
