The tragedy of Israeli-Palestinian violence continues daily. Come raise your voice for peace; take action for justice. Join with Jews, Muslims, Christians, and secular humanists in a constructive expression of commitment and hope.

Walk for a Just Peace in Israel and Palestine: Meet at the northwest corner of Lake St. & Oak Park Ave. (downtown Oak Park) and we'll walk west to Harlem Ave., back along Lake St. and then to Oak Park Ave. (1 1/3 miles total).

Advocacy buffet and potluck: After the walk, we'll meet at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 611 Randolph St., Oak Park, to write hundreds of letters on a number of issues to national and civic leaders, urging them to stop ignoring this crisis and take courageous action toward a just and peaceful resolution.

Please bring signs and banners: The organizers of this interfaith nonviolent walk for peace reject all anti-Jewish and anti-Arab language and symbols. We are committed to nonviolence in word and deed and our goal is to stand against all hatred and to give witness to the dream that all people of faith and of secular commitment can come together in the cause of peace with justice in Israel and Palestine.

Please bring pens: Be ready to wage peace with the power of your words and the commitment of your heart.

Please bring a potluck dish to share: Activism requires all kinds of nourishment. We'll share the table as we share our hopes.

Why the Walk for a Just Peace?

The second annual Walk for a Just Peace in Israel and Palestine will be held on May 4, 2003, in Oak Park. On the same day, along Chicago's lakefront, the Jewish United Fund will host the Walk With Israel, an annual observance of Israel Solidarity Day.

Because growing numbers of Americans find themselves unable to support the actions of the Israeli government, Oak Park's Committee for a Just Peace in Israel and Palestine has spearheaded the organization of a positive, inclusive alternative to the Walk With Israel. Many individuals concerned about the deteriorating Israeli-Palestinian situation will find it helpful and hopeful to join in a public expression in support of three simple points of unity: an end to the military occupation, an end to violence from both sides, and affirmation of Israeli and Palestinian nonviolent peacemakers. The Walk for a Just Peace is being conducted in support of justice and reconciliation, rather than escalating violence, oppression, and destruction.

The organizers of the Walk for a Just Peace grieve for the suffering of both Israelis and Palestinians. Palestinian lives, property, and society have been shattered by occupation. And although the Israelis are clearly in a position of superior power by any measure, their citizens, economy, and society are suffering terribly from the ongoing conflict.

There are no winners in the tragic Israeli-Palestinian conflict. As Americans, we are compelled to speak out, to call for balance in US policy toward the region—not uncritical support for one side in the conflict. As Jewish, Muslim, Christian, and secular Americans we support peace and reconciliation.
