This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Israeli occupation of East Jerusalem, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip, which began in June, 1967. On May 20, for the sixth consecutive year, the annual Walk for a Just Peace in Israel and Palestine will occur in Oak Park, organized by the Committee for a Just Peace in Israel and Palestine. The Walk draws co-sponsorship from numerous diverse organizations and hundreds of individual supporters from Chicago and beyond. As in previous years, Jews, Muslims, Christians, and secularists will assemble this year in Oak Park to call for an end to the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories and the U.S. policies that sustain the occupation. Special guest speakers will challenge and inspire. This year’s invited speakers include:
The program that follows the walk will feature delicious food, conversation with old and new friends, and letter-writing tools to urge our elected representatives to pursue a pro-peace, pro-justice agenda in Israel/Palestine. Join us on May 20. Together, we recognize the interdependence of Israeli and Palestinian aspirations and express solidarity with both peoples. We condemn the use of violence, military force, and oppression. We affirm our support for the Palestinians and Israelis working to end the occupation and to establish a peace built on justice. We call for a future in which Palestinians and Israelis coexist in peace as equals. We are part of a growing movement committed to justice: a humane and equitable future for all the people of the region. |
